Moonhorse 30th Anniversary
Last year in 2025, Moonhorse Dance Theatre celebrated the 25th anniversary of our long running acclaimed series Older & Reckless. It was a big show, and a blast was had by all!
However, this year in 2026, we have met another milestone as a company. In May 1996, Moonhorse Dance Theatre was officially incorporated. This means that this coming season, 26/27 Moonhorse Dance Theatre will have been officially operating as a company for 30 years!
In our art form, under the constant negotiations regarding space, funding and validation, this is an accomplishment to be sure.
Moonhorse Dance Theatre was founded by dance artist Claudia Mooreβ¦
as a vehicle to show her own choreography and to commission fellow local choreographers. The work was presented locally in various venues across the city and established itself as a solid home base for Claudiaβs artistic vision and that of her collaborators.
It would be 5 years later that Older & Reckless was born in the Dancemakers Studio atop the mechanic shop on the corner of Dupont and Ossington. O&R went on to become a celebrated community staple with its representation of lifelong dance artists over the age of 45 prompting Moonhorse Dance Theatre to reexamine and change their mandate to that of a presenting company.
In the past 30 years, over 200 artists have been presented through the O&R seriesβ¦
and many other auxiliary programmes have surfaced through the mandate, providing opportunities for old and young dance artists across the country. These have included a much-loved Community Performance Project, a robust dance class series, workshops and connections with lifelong artists across the province, nation and even a few overseas.
Moonhorse Dance Theatre exists in the now and who are we now at 30 years old?
This coming season, we are marking this 30 th Anniversary with a reflective shift in our approach, responding to the changing landscape of our local scene. Focusing on our grassroots beginnings and independent spirit here on our home turf, and an exciting collaboration in Vancouver bringing lifelong artists from our two cities together for further experimentation.
Stay tuned for details as we roll out our 26/27 season in the coming months.
