DANCE ENCOUNTERS

Classes & Workshops

“To be in a space with others, moving, sometimes we get great music, there's a lot of laughs, and sometimes some tears because it's very emotional and it's really special to be connecting with other people, and to dance! I mean how great! What could be better?!”

Julia Sasso

TASTE OF DANCE

Wow... that sure was a beautiful and fun evening! Our Taste of Dance Wine pairing party was a tremendous success…

  • Gorgeous weather, a magical setting courtesy of the gracious Sanders family, fancy snacks from Sublime Catering and delicious wine sponsored by Closson Chase.

Special thanks to Wine/Dance co-conspirator Brodie Stevenson for his dapper look and thoughtful wine matching and to Gavin McDonald for running the show with his savvy production assistance.

We are so thankful to everyone who blessed us with their presence and to those who donated to us in lieu of their absence.

PHALANX: REVIVAL

Thanks to all that came out to support Phalanx: Revival at Summerworks in August…

  • It was an intense and very special project for Moonhorse to take on. We are so grateful we did it not only with our peers but also surrounded by enthusiastic audience members, some very familiar with the work and some very fresh to it.

If you would like to know what we were doing, why we were doing it and who we were while doing it, please see the program that is packed with info. And check out thearticle in intermission written by Chris Dupuis!

THINGS WORTH CARING ABOUT

TAKING IT BACK TO OUR ROOTS

  • Take a drive down our Archival Highway… back to the beginning and glance over the many artists that have been presented by MDT since 2000.

REFLECTIONS ON THE INDUSTRY

  • Some observations…
We, at Moonhorse Dance Theatre, along with Arts practitioners throughout Canada, have been listening and observing as many changes occur in our industry and how the loss of so much foundation is affecting the health of professional artists spiritually, mentally, physically, and practically.

From companies folding, leadership roles in limbo, the loss of dozens of rehearsal and performance spaces, and announcements of Government funding cuts amidst overwhelmingly large numbers of Arts Councils applications for funding; the list of discombobulated theatres, dance companies, galleries, and organizations reaches across the country.

MDT is dedicated to the support of lifelong dance artists: those who have spent their entire lives through thick and thin, mastering their craft, taking risks creatively and financially, repeatedly waiting for months for their project grant approval to know if they are working or not. Yet year after year they persevere. Amid all this instability, now is the time to support each other and the arts communities we so love.

    How can you help?

    • Learn about grant dissemination processes of the arts councils by visiting their websites and contact them with concerns. Here’s a recent letter from the Director/CEO of the Canada Council of the Arts addressed to the Canadian Arts Community. It gives you an idea of where we are at…

    • Listen carefully to policy makers as they speak about cultural and arts issues.

    • Talk to your friends, families, and colleagues about the importance of arts programming in our cities and towns.

    • Support by donation to Arts organizations that you wish to see grow.

    • And most importantly, go see a show! Bring a friend!

    We are rich in culture.

A HEARTFELT THANK YOU

  • A HEARTFELT THANK YOU… to EVERYONE who has, and continues to, contribute to our well-being as an organisation! Your support allows us to, in turn, nurture and amplify the voices of artists who have spent their lifetimes taking risks and progressing dance as an art form.

We could not do this without you!

We look forward to continuing to persevere alongside you, in community.
