speaking on Ancient Echoes in Contemporary Creations

Sashar Zarif is a masterful dancer, multi-disciplinary performing artist, educator and researcher. His interests - identity, globalization and cross-cultural collaborations- fuel his practice, steeped in the mysticism, artistry and history of traditional, ritualistic, and contemporary dance and music of the Near Eastern and Central Asian regions. He tours internationally to pursue his ongoing artistic research and promote cultural dialogue, and has received numerous national and international awards for his collaborations. He was nominated for a Dora Mavor Moore Award for outstanding performance in 2008.

Please read more about Sashar’s compelling and often harrowing journey from his birthplace to Canada by following this link to Carol Anderson’s interview with Sashar in Dance Collection Danse’s “Enter Dancing: Narratives of Migration” http://www.dcd.ca/exhibitions/enterdancing/zarif1.html

“I never decided to be a dancer or a choreographer; I simply was born into it. I was raised on a stage of transformative performances by an extraordinary performer, my grandmother, who danced into her 90s. In my childhood I could not help but see life through my grandmother’s eyes. I was my grandmother’s audience. I was a participant at the same time. Our interaction was personal and as intimate as breath. The performer was not performing, but experiencing.” – Sashar Zarif
